Report: Online Advertised Job Vacancies Dip in June

Total online job ads were 4.3 million in June, a slight drop of 94,000 or 2 percent from May, according to The Conference Board Help-Wanted OnLine Data Series.

Online advertised vacancies continue to be up substantially (24%) over the year (June'06-June'07). There were 2.8 advertised vacancies online for every 100 persons in the labor force in June.

"Online job demand has been virtually unchanged over the last few months but continues to show a better than 20 percent gain over last year,"says Gad Levanon, economist at The Conference Board. "Tight labor markets in many areas of the country and in specific occupations and industries like IT and healthcare are forcing companies to advertise more aggressively than last year in order to find the employees they need. We do not expect economic growth to accelerate until the end of the year, but finding theright employee is already a challenge in many areas of the country."

The 4.3 million unduplicated online advertised vacancies in June include 2.7 million new ads that did not appear in May, as well as reposted ads from the previous months. During June, both total and new ads declined by 2 percent from the previous month. Over the year (June'06-June'07) total ads and new ads rose 24 percent and 19 percent, respectively.

The June figures reported in the Help-Wanted OnLine Data Series reflect the sum of the number of unduplicated online job ads for each dayfrom mid-May to mid-June. This new series, which includes data from April 2005, does not have sufficient history to allow for seasonally adjusted monthly data.

Think That Conversation From Your Office Phone Is Private? Think Again

News reports thata Wal-Mart employee taped telephone conversations between a New York Times reporter and other Wal-Mart employees brings to light the practice of corporations who require employees to consent to company surveillance of calls made through company systems and equipment.

Wal-Mart officials have said the employee in the recently reported case was not authorized to make the recordings and adds that company policy restricts monitoring of employee communications to instances in which fraud or criminal activity is suspected, according to a Vanderbilt University statement.

However, that policy is not a requirement. "We know from recent surveys by groups such as the American Management Association and others that many firms do routinely monitor employee communications that employees might think are private, without cause of suspicion," says Bruce Barry, professor of management and sociology. "This means workers, especially in the private sector, work under the threat that their expressive activity is being watched, which has the effect of chilling free expression that might have nothing to do with the corporation, or that might involve whistleblowing regarding corporate misbehavior."

Barry has focused recent research on free expression in and around the workplace from legal, managerial, and ethical perspectives. He is the author of a soon-to-be-published book on the subject, Speechless: The Erosion of Free Expression in the American Workplace.

Study Finds Much Support In Canada For Including People With Intellectual Disabilities In Workplace

People with intellectual disabilities (ID) should be included in the workplace, and supported in their efforts to get there, say a majority of respondents in a Queen’s University poll on public attitudes toward employing people with ID.

Sixty-five per cent of respondents say that workers with ID should work alongside workers without ID, while 71 per cent note that a lack of appropriate training programs is likely preventing those with ID from obtaining employment, the university says.

The study will appear in the Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation on the eve of the signing of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability, March 30.

“The findings from our poll are very positive in terms of the willingness of the public to see people with ID working,” says Rosemary Lysaght (Rehabilitation Therapy). “They indicate that people understand the right of people with ID to contribute and derive the same benefits from work that other people get. In fact many people with ID already perform significant amounts of volunteer work for their communities. We know from interviews we have conducted as part of another study with paid and unpaid works with ID that many would prefer to be paid.”

Lysaght conducted the research along with study lead Philip Burge (Psychiatry) and co-investigator Hélène Ouellette-Kuntz (Psychiatry/Community Health and Epidemiology). They are all members of the South Eastern Ontario Community-University Research Alliance in Intellectual Disabilities (CURA), which funded the research through a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada grant.

Entitled Public Views on Employment of People With Intellectual Disabilities, the paper notes that this is the first time a sizable sample has been surveyed on the issue of inclusive employment in Canada.

“We now know that public attitudes are not a barrier to keeping workers with ID out of the workplace. Another study we are conducting shows that, in our region, the majority of workers with ID who do find work hold service-oriented jobs and are regularly in contact with the public. Our poll also told us that people sense that the supports and services to get people with ID into meaningful work are not adequate,” says Lysaght.

The 680 poll respondents were asked their views on the best type of employment for most adults with ID, the impact of ID workers on their co-workers without ID, and the barriers to workplace inclusion faced by workers with ID.
