The Story Of The American Eagle Coin

The American Eagle gold coin is produced by the US Mint.

Congress approved the American Eagle in 1986 and the coin is a convenient way for investors to add gold, silver or platinum to their investment portfolios, according to the Mint. (Platinum American Eagle coins were added to the line in 1997.)

The obverse side of the American Eagle features the Lady Liberty design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. That design, according to the Mint, first appeared on the United States' $20, or double-eagle, gold piece in 1907, where it remained until 1933. The reverse of the American Eagle features a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchlings and was created by sculptor Miley Busiek, according to Wikipedia.

The American Eagle coins, available in units of 10 one-ounce coins for personal delivery only, are for the most part minted by the West Point Mint facility and the coins carry the West Point stamp.
