Distance Learning: Adviser In Iraq Talks About Online Education

Talk about distance learning. Judy Kenney is a human resources specialist in Iraq. She's also pursuing a PhD at capella university.

A human resource specialist in Iraq is a senior civilian personnel advisor and uses their expert knowledge of civilian personnel activities for staffing, classification, training, management-employee relations; employee benefits, entitlements and allowances; and other key personnel tasks.

Kenney is balancing all of that crucial work on behalf of the U.S. military in a combat theater with an education at Capella -- an accredited online university. In all, Capella serves more than 19,000 students in all 50 states and 56 countries.

Kenney was the recent focus of one of Capella's ongoing "Inside Online Education" podcasts. The roughly 15-minute podcasts offer a look at Capella, its students and faculty. Listeners can subscribe to the podcast RSS feed at capellacommons.com/rss/. They are also available via subscription from iTunes. The Kenney podcast is No. 14.

Develop Your Statistical Literacy at Capella

Statistics get thrown around all the time and it was Mark Twain once said, "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics."

If you took the Statistical Literacy course at capella university, you'd likely have a better ability to think critically and hypothetically about statistics.

Capella developed its course in collaboration with Augsburg College, which is a small, private liberal arts institution in Minneapolis. Augsburg was the recipient of a W.M. Keck Foundation grant designed to "develop and deliver course-room materials for the teaching of Statistical Literacy." This grant provided the resources for the development of teaching strategies
and methods along with an appropriate textbook.

For many learners, this course is an awakening to the world of statistics, Capella says.

"While they have lived in a world of increasing complexity, they viewed statistics in
simple way prior to the course. Nearly all learners comment about the change in perspective that they have after taking this course," says Marc Isaacson, a course designer for Capella University who helped create the Statistical Literacy course.

Founded in 1993, Capella is an accredited, online university that offers graduate degree programs in business, information technology, education, human services, public safety, and psychology, and bachelor’s degree programs in business, information technology, and public safety.
