Find The Marketing Lists That Bring You Paying Customers

It's pretty much a cliche to say that any given marketing list lives a very short time. People move on, change phone numbers -- soon enough you need a new list just to keep current.

And in the current economic downturn, being able to find the right consumer mailing lists becomes critical to feed your customer pipeline and keep sales from sagging.

Whether for direct mail or for the ever-tricky telemarketing, The List Company is a mailing list company that has one of the largest databases which contains more than 14 million US businesses and 300 million US consumers.

Among list brokers, TLC has a distinction of offering mortgage lists and weekly new homeowner lists. In this turbulent market and foreclosure meltdown, anyone in the real-estate market needs the latest and best lists in these areas to keep agents and salespeople productive. You don't want to spend your time chasing the wrong leads.

Ice Cream, Frozen Desserts Market Expected to Fatten to $27.6 Billion by 2012

Despite unchanging consumer demand and fickle consumer tastes, the market for frozen desserts is expected to grow by more than $4 billion by 2012, according to The U.S. Market for Ice Cream and Related Frozen Desserts, a new report from market research publisher Packaged Facts.

Dollar sales continue to grow annually, but not because Americans are eating more frozen desserts: instead, the population is paying more for what it eats. Prices of all dairy products are at an all-time high, and frozen desserts are no exception. Although these higher prices make shoppers hesitant about purchasing frozen desserts at the retail level, they sure don't hesitate at the foodservice level. This phenomenon is driving foodservice sales while retail sales are slowing.

Although ice cream accounted for 59.2 percent (or $13.8 billion) of all U.S. frozen dessert sales in 2007, ice cream's place at the dessert table dropped 0.3 percentage points from 2006. Sales likely went to frozen yogurt. Frozen yogurt's 4.1 percent CAGR from 2003 to 2007 is the highest of all frozen desserts categories. In 2007 alone, frozen yogurt sales grew 12 percent from the 2006 level. With consumers seeking better-for-you indulgence in a frozen form, frozen yogurt manufacturers have engaged in more innovation and new flavors, helping to revive the packaged frozen yogurt business.

"Because this is a mature market, growth for one marketer often comes at the expense of another. And within a company, growth of an individual product line or flavor often cannibalizes sales of another item. This is particularly true with frozen novelties, where product life cycles are extremely short," says Cathy Minkler, editor of Packaged Facts. "Shoppers tend to browse shelves, actively on the lookout for new tastes, informative and exciting packaging, interesting product innovations, or products offering a 'surprise' factor."

How Consumers Miscalculate Sale Prices

Quick: You’re walking by a store window and you see a sign that says, “20% off the original price plus an additional 25% off the already reduced sale price.” So, how much is the discount" Consumers often mistakenly think the total discount is 45% off the original price when, in fact, the true discount is 40%. A thought-provoking new study from the October issue of the Journal of Consumer Research explores why consumers frequently think a double discount is a better deal than a single discount of the same total magnitude.

“Retailers frequently use the strategy of double discounts for their regular promotions or to induce customers to open a credit card account with them. Such errors in peoples’ judgments of the net effect of multiple price discounts . . . have implications for a variety of marketing settings including advertising, promotion, pricing, and public policy,” write Haipeng (Allan) Chen (University of Miami) and Akshay Rao (University of Minnesota).

Prior studies have shown that even math teachers frequently have trouble calculating percentages. In the first experiment, the researchers found that 59 percent of the respondents – students at a large university – erroneously added the two percentages to calculate the overall discount. Only 26 percent of students got the answer right.

As not everyone was prone to the miscalculation effect, the researchers then sought to identify the situations that help counter calculation error. They first incentivized one group of participants, offering $2 for correct answers. The rate of computational error was 26 percent, compared to 44 percent for students who were not offered money for correct answers.

Participants were also less prone to computational error when the problems were easier or the results seemingly illogical. Students presented with a base price of $100 from which to calculate the double discount were less likely to make an error than students presented with a base price of $80. Similarly, the researchers asked participants to calculate either a double percentage decrease of 70% and 45% or a price increase of the same percentages. Those who mistakenly added the figures in the decrease condition were confronted with a decrease of 115%, and were more likely to make errors than those confronted with a 115% increase (explained as a change in gasoline prices).

“Since this computational error can potentially influence peoples’ judgment in a variety of settings, the economic impact of such errors on consumer welfare may be substantial,” Chen and Rao write.

The researchers also point to policy implications of computational error outside of consumer settings, such as when a 70% increase followed by a 60% decrease in statewide test scores is considered positive, even though the net effect on test scores is a 32% decrease.

Last Harry Potter Book Breaks Borders Store Sales Records

More than 1,200 Borders and Waldenbooks stores around the globe sold approximately 1.2 million copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on its first day of sales, Saturday, July 21. This is the highest single day sales of any title ever in Borders history. This first-day sales total for book seven -- the final book in the Harry Potter series -- compares to 850,000 copies sold worldwide by Borders of book six, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, its first day of sales in 2005.

The company estimates that more than 800,000 Harry Potter fans attended celebrations in its U.S. stores that lasted until the early morning hours, where fans of the wildly popular Harry Potter series began the midnight countdown at Borders with "Grand Hallows Ball" celebrations. Every store crowned a king and queen of the Ball who were rewarded for having the best
costumes. Prizes were awarded for the winners of the Harry Potter Spelling Bee and the "Great Snape Debate." The most coveted awards at Borders stores were a giant poster of the cover art for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows signed by artist Mary Grand Pre, and the opportunity to be first in line to purchase the new book.

"We are absolutely thrilled that so many customers chose to spend this very special evening with Borders," says Borders Chief Executive Officer George Jones. "Our store staffs worked tirelessly throughout the evening and early morning hours to give our customers an exceptional experience. I am proud of the way Borders made the final Harry Potter book an event to remember in the lives of so many children and adults worldwide."

Bottled Water Industry Sees Growth in 2006

The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA), in conjunction with Beverage Marketing Corporation (BMC), today released bottled water statistics for the year 2006, compiled by BMC. These numbers show that U.S. bottled water sales and consumption continue to rise, with the latest upward trend reflected in 2006 when total bottled water volume exceeded 8.25 billion gallons, a 9.5 percent increase over 2005, and the 2006 bottled water per capita consumption level of 27.6 gallons increased by over two gallons, from 25.4 gallons per capita the previous year.

Additionally, the wholesale dollar sales for bottled water exceeded$10.8 billion in 2006, an 8.5 percent increase over the $10 billion in2005. These statistics demonstrate continued consumer demand and appreciation for the convenience and good taste of bottled water brands consumed on-the-go, during exercise, at restaurants or meetings, and at home or the office, according to the association. However, consumers should also know that bottled watersafety and quality result from multiple layers of regulation and standards at the federal, state and industry levels, the association says.

Bottled water is regulated by the U.S. Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) as a packaged food product, and has issued standards for safety, quality, production, labeling, and identity. Along with the FDA's Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), which are required of all foods, bottled water must comply with several other applicable regulations, including Standards of Identity, Standards of Quality and additional, specific bottled water GMPs. Being a packaged food product, bottled water is also bound by the Nutrition Labeling Education Act (NLEA) and the full range of FDA protective measures designed to enforce productsafety and protect consumers, the water association says. States also regulate bottled waterinspections, sampling, analyzing and approving bottled water sources, it adds.

"While all beverages have their role in a marketplace with an abundance of drink choices," says Stephen Kay, IBWA vice president of communications, "consumers are choosing bottled water as a refreshing, hydrating beverage and as an alternative to others that may contain calories, caffeine, sugar, artificial colors, alcohol or other ingredients, which they wish to moderate or avoid. For instance, during 2006, individual servings of bottled water in sizes of 1.5 liters and smaller accounted for 57.1% of the volume of bottled water sold, indicating that consumers are choosing bottled water in lieu of other bottled drinks."
